Easter long weekend trip to South West Rocks
STOP PRESS: TRIP IS NOW FULL.
Come and join DOUTS on a trip to South West Rocks over Easter.
South West Rocks is a 6 hour drive north of Sydney and is home to one of the best dives you will ever do in your lifetime: Fish Rock Cave, voted amongst the top ten dives in Australia. Apart from the cave, there are several other dives around the Rock where you will get to see marine life common to both temperate and tropical waters, in depths varying from 12 to about 30 metres, with diving suitable for all levels. The cave itself is created by a fault in the island and runs from 24 metres at the entry, for 125 metres through the rock, emerging into a large blue, fish filled entrance fringed by pink gorgonian corals at 12 metres. Inside the cave you will find an amazing diversity of marine life including wobbegongs, painted crayfish, cowries, and many more species. There is also a bubble cave. Fish Rock is critical habitat for the grey nurse sharks, which live here in large numbers all year round. Many will argue that this area offers better diving than the Great Barrier Reef. Better still, it is within a day’s drive of Sydney.
DOUTS has secured a package deal from one of the local dive operators in South West Rocks, the South West Rocks Dive Centre. The package is as follows:
- $545 for 4 nights accommodation on site, 4 double boat dives (8 dives in total), weights, second tank and free air, continental breakfast. The accommodation is bunk style, with between 6-8 bunks per room.
- $640 for the same package in twin share accommodation also on site.
This price is based on you bringing your own gear, including a torch, which will be necessary for the cave dive.
The package is valid for the nights of 1-4 April 2010, inclusive, with diving from 2-5 April 2010, inclusive. The first boat leaves at 7 a.m. and returns at 12 noon; the second boat leaves at 12 noon and returns at 5 p.m. Snacks will be available on board between double dives.
Meals: South West Rocks has a supermarket, pubs and other cheap dining options.
Getting there: transport is available to 8 divers in the UTS bus for a nominal cost of $20 return. The bus will be leaving Broadway campus on Thursday 1 April and returning on Monday 5 April. For those who miss the bus and are transport challenged, there will be additional opportunity for car pooling. One way or another, we will try to get you there and back.
To book: as availability is limited, please register and pay $100 by 26 February 2010 to secure your spot and the balance by 12 March 2010.
